Snorkeling

Description:

Bonaire snorkeling

The Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire in the southern Caribbean Sea is recognized as one of the world's leaders in coral reef conservation. Bonaire is a natural paradise: the Bonaire Marine Park was established in 1979 to help protect Bonaire's pristine reef and diverse marine life, and the entire northern end of the island is a national park.

Bonaire's reefs are unique in that they have dense coral formations in just a few feet of water. Accompanied by a marine naturalist, we should see an incredible number and variety of fish and exotic corals. Snorkeling experiences vary from coral terraces to reef crests and reef drop-offs.

We explore this underwater paradise both from the beach and by private excursion boat. Beach snorkels typically involve a shallow sand flat that explodes with active coral heads. Bonaire is also excellent for birdwatching with over 170 species, and one day is dedicated to exploring Bonaire's national parks.

Our home for the week will be at a seaside resort, offering comfortable double occupancy rooms with private bath. This adventure will be best enjoyed by those who have had snorkeling experience in the past.

Your naturalist will help identify the many different fish and coral species and explain the ecology of the reef, as well as the natural and maritime history of the island.
